Varicose veins are superficial, dilated veins that swell and protrude from the surface of the skin. They can be a purple or dark blue in colour.
Risk factors affect one in every two people over 50 years of age. They are more common among women than men.
Prevention. Exercise, weight loss, elevation of the legs when resting and not crossing them when sitting can help prevent worsening of varicose veins. Wear loose clothing and avoid standing for long periods.
