Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus, which usually occurs before people reach ten years of age, but adults can also get it.
Symptoms. People with chickenpox could have hundreds of vesicles that dry and form crusts. A healthy person can inhale the chickenpox virus from a sick person’s nasopharyngeal secretions.
The first sign of chickenpox is usually the appearance of a small red lesions on the skin that can be mistaken for insect bites at first.
Treatment. The doctor will prescribe antipyretics such as paracetamol if the person has a fever, and drugs for itching and to dry the blisters. It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids during the febrile period.
The disease can also spread via skin lesions or through patients’ contaminated objects. Although it is very rare, if a pregnant woman gets chickenpox during the first months of pregnancy, she can pass it on to the foetus and it can cause birth defects. The disease begins abruptly with mild fever or high fever in some cases, malaise, loss of appetite and a generalised rash. The person may also experience neck pain and cervical nodes may ignite.
Usually the first sign of chickenpox is the appearance of a small red lesions on the skin that can be confused with insect bites at first. These lesions evolve and, in about 24 hours, they become small vesicles or blisters that dry out and crust over.
The skin lesions can be located anywhere on the body and appear in successive crops, so it is characteristic that the lesions occur simultaneously in different stages (spots, vesicles and crusts).
A very distressing symptom is the itching that accompanies the skin lesions. Sometimes, this symptom is so intense that it prevents people sleeping.
