Toxoplasmosis is a flu-like illness caused by a protozoan parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, which is usually hosted in felines (cats, bobcats, etc.).
Risk factors. If a woman is infected shortly before or during pregnancy, the infection can cause abortions or birth defects that can affect the baby's brain, eyes and other organs.
Causes. Humans become infected by eating raw or undercooked meat, as well as ingesting food or water that is contaminated with faeces from infected cats.
Treatment. Pyrimethamine in combination with sulfadiazine and folinic acid is prescribed.
