Rheumatoid arthritis

Arthritis is an "inflammation of the joints" that can be caused by different diseases.

Risk factors. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common chronic arthritis and occurs mainly in women who are between 45 and 55 years of age . Factors such as humidity and climate do not trigger arthritis, but may contribute to the feeling of having more pain in damaged joints.

Causes. In most cases the cause is unknown. Chronic inflammatory arthritis is a disorder of the immune system resulting in ongoing inflammation. There is likely an underlying genetic predisposition.

Treatment. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) (to curb inflammatory activity). Biopharmaceuticals can also be used by hospitals either subcutaneously or in the vein. They are used in cases when the arthritis resists other treatments.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a form of arthritis that causes pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of joint function. It is much more common in women than in men. It usually starts between the ages of 25 and 55.

Rheumatoid arthritis is different from osteoarthritis, the most common form of joint disease of the elderly. RA can affect other parts of the body besides the joints, such as the eyes, mouth and lungs. RA is an autoimmune disease, which means that arthritis is the result of an attack by the immune system on its own tissues.

Most types of arthritis cause pain and inflammation or swelling in the joints. Joints are places where two bones come together (elbow, knee, hips, etc.). Over time, an inflamed and swollen joint can be seriously injured. Some types of arthritis can also cause problems in other organs, such as the eyes or skin.

There are several types of arthritis. One type of chronic joint disease, arthritis or osteoarthritis, is often related to aging or to a previous injury. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of autoimmune arthritis. Juvenile idiopathic rheumatoid arthritis is a form of arthritis that occurs in children. Infectious arthritis is one caused by an infection that has spread from one part of the body to the joints.

The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. Genes, environment and hormones can contribute. Current treatments (medications, changes in lifestyle, surgery...) can slow or stop joint damage and reduce pain and inflammation.

In addition to the symptoms in joints, arthritis sufferers may have other general symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue.
  • Fever.
  • Weight loss.
  • Loss of appetite.

Some chronic inflammatory rheumatism can also affect other organs such as the skin, kidneys, lungs or nervous system.

Risk factors. Women are three times more prone to the disease than men.
