Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium leprae.
Risk factors. Leprosy is not highly contagious. It is transmitted by nasal and oral drops when there is close and frequent contact with untreated patients. Leprosy is a curable disease. If it is cured in the early stages, disability can be avoided. If left untreated, leprosy can be progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes can occur.
Treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment with several drugs remain the fundamental elements to achieve elimination of the disease.
