Growth disorders

If your child seems significantly shorter or taller than other children his age, this may be normal due to genes in your family, or he may have a growth problem.

Risk factors. Sometimes very fast or very slow growth can indicate a disease or a hormonal problem.

Causes. The pituitary gland produces the growth hormone that stimulates the bones and other tissues. Children who do not produce enough hormones are very short.

Treatments are aimed to supplementing the deficient hormones.

Adults can also have an excess of growth hormone, meaning that they produce too much of the hormone. Usually the cause is a benign tumour in the pituitary gland. Too much growth hormone can cause gigantism in children, in which case the bones and body grow, too. In adults, it can cause acromegaly, which causes the hands, feet and face to be larger than normal.
