Constipation is less than three bowel movements per week, associated with a decrease of the water content of the stool. The most common symptoms are hard or dry stools and evacuation can sometimes be very painful.
Risk factors. Everyone gets constipated at some time in their lives. A diet low in fibre may be one of the main factors, as well as genetic factors, the abuse of drugs that reduce bowel movements, or low fluid intake.
Prevention. Eating high fibre foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains, drinking plenty of water or fluids and getting enough exercise.
