Tuberculosis bacilli spread from person to person through the air. The germs are expelled from the lungs into the air when a person with tuberculosis coughs or sneezes. For infection to occur, however, it is necessary to have prolonged exposure to a patient with untreated tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis is not spread by sharing eating utensils, cups or cigarettes, or via contact with saliva when kissing someone.
