Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections acquired after having unprotected sex with an already infected person.

Risk factors. They can be spread anally, vaginally, orally, or through contact with blood.

Prevention. You should not self-medicate because the consequences can be very serious if the STD is not treated properly.

Whenever you suspect that you may have a disease, either via sexual contact or through someone’s infected fluids, you must visit the doctor.

Remember to follow these tips:

Maintain relationships with a single partner and, in this case, both partners should get tested before initiating sexual contact if one of the partners had any risky contact before this relationship.
Use a condom with strangers, as its effectiveness is demonstrated (95% approx.) to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
Pregnant women: every woman should have a blood test when they think or they are pregnant because diseases can be transmitted to the child.
Injuries to the genitals, any sore or pain in the sexual organs should receive medical attention to diagnose the cause.

Risk situations

If you have unprotected oral, anal or genital sex (without a condom) with an infected person, even if no apparent lesion is present.
If your sexual partner has or has had a sexually transmitted infection.
If you have a new sexual partner or more than two sexual partners in the last year.
If you have or your partner has sex with others.
If you have sex under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
If you (or your sexual partner) have shared syringes, needles or other utensils used to inject drugs, for tattooing or piercings, or have either shared sex toys.
