Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder, characterised by profound changes in thoughts and language, affecting the perception of reality and sense of self. It often includes hallucinatory experiences such as hearing voices or delusions. It can impair functioning through the loss of the acquired ability to earn a living, or via an interruption of studies.

Schizophrenia usually begins in late adolescence or early adulthood. There are effective treatments for schizophrenia and those affected by it can lead productive lives and integrate into society.

Treatment. The patient is unaware of the disease or will not accept it. Medical help is recommended. Early treatment (psychological, psychopharmacological, individual and family psychoeducational) facilitates recovery.

Consult your doctor if you or a member of your family experiences:

  • Voices telling you to hurt yourself or others.
  • An urgent need to hurt yourself or others.
  • Feelings of being scared or overwhelmed.
  • Seeing things that are not there.
  • Feeling that you cannot leave the house.
  • Feelings that you cannot keep yourself safe.
