Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of cells present excessive electrical discharges and carry an overwhelming amount of signals.

Epilepsy can appear at any age, but primary epilepsy usually begins early in life. In a few cases, when the frequency of seizures is not controlled, permanent brain damage (disability and severe disability) can result.

Symptoms. Spasms, loss of consciousness, periods of confusion, fixated gaze, etc.

Epilepsy can be caused by brain injuries, especially when it begins in adulthood, but in many cases it is a genetic predisposition.

Medication is used for treatment. Surgery may be helpful In severe and highly-specific cases.

There is a broad array of antiepileptic drugs used properly according to the type of epilepsy and the patient. In some cases, it is important to know the level of medication in the blood to establish with certainty the required dose.

In some cases, treatment may be withdrawn if seizures do not occur over a period of three to five years. Between 10% and 20% of patients do not respond to treatment. In these cases it is necessary to reassess the diagnosis and consider surgical treatment.
